“Shenandoah’s Master of Science: Organizational Leadership is special because it brings together working professionals and empowers them to use their knowledge and experience to solve real-world problems. As the program was very hands-on and discussion-based, we learned to lead together and to apply what we learned to various situations we may encounter in leadership. Organizational leadership is the study of how people, systems, and ethics interact to shape how institutions function, grow, and serve their communities. Rather than focusing on financial markets or operational strategy like a traditional business degree, organizational leadership zeroes in on the human dimensions of management: motivating teams, driving institutional change, navigating public and nonprofit environments, and making ethical decisions at scale. The Shenandoah MSOL develops this expertise through coursework in strategic planning, servant leadership, public sector management, diversity and inclusion, and applied research methodology. These skills are applicable across industries and sectors, particularly in roles that require leading people through complexity. Graduates pursue careers such as human resources manager and public relations manager, with median annual salaries for management professionals exceeding $116,000 according to the BLS. See career outcomes on the MSOL program page.

Both degrees prepare professionals for leadership roles, but they take fundamentally different approaches. The MBA is a broad business credential covering finance, marketing, operations, supply chain, and corporate strategy — designed for professionals pursuing executive roles in corporate environments or seeking to pivot across industries with a versatile credential. The MSOL is specifically focused on the human and organizational dimensions of leadership: how institutions function, how teams are motivated, how ethical decisions are made, and how leaders drive community-level impact. It is a natural fit for professionals in government, nonprofit, education, healthcare administration, or mission-driven organizations where people-centered leadership is the primary skill. The MSOL is also offered at a lower per-credit rate than the MBA, making it a cost-effective path for professionals whose goals align with its focus. Compare all online degree options on the online degrees page.

Yes. The Shenandoah MSOL is 100% online and designed entirely around the realities of working professionals. There are no in-person requirements, no set class times, and no mandatory synchronous sessions. Courses are delivered in an accelerated format, and the full 33-credit program can be completed in as little as 12 months. Small class sizes of 11:1 student-to-faculty ratio ensure you still get personalized engagement with faculty even in an asynchronous environment. The curriculum is also structured to let you apply what you’re learning directly to your current workplace — making your continued employment an asset, not an obstacle. Multiple start dates are available throughout the year — visit the admissions page for upcoming enrollment windows.

The MSOL is an excellent fit for professionals who are ready to step into or grow within leadership roles, but whose goals are better served by a focused leadership credential than a broad business degree. It is particularly well-suited for those working in or aspiring to lead within public sector organizations, nonprofits, educational institutions, healthcare administration, or community-focused environments where servant leadership and ethical decision-making are central to the work. It also appeals to career changers from fields like education, social services, or government who want a rigorous, research-grounded credential that builds on — rather than replaces — their existing expertise. If your goal is to lead teams more effectively, take on administrative or management responsibilities, or drive institutional change, the MSOL is structured to help you get there. Explore the program in full on the MSOL overview page.

Applicants need a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with a preferred minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. A GPA below 3.0 does not automatically disqualify you — applications are reviewed holistically, taking professional experience and trajectory into account. No GMAT or GRE is required. Application materials include unofficial transcripts (official required prior to enrollment), a personal essay, and a completed online application. For those with prior graduate-level coursework, up to six transfer credits from an accredited institution may be applied toward the 33-credit program. Full requirements and next steps are listed on the admissions page.
