Where Is a Teaching Licensure Required?
Public schools in every state usually require educators to obtain a professional teaching license. Therefore, teachers at private or charter schools who want to move to public education roles are required to earn a teaching license, along with new teachers who are working with a provisional — or temporary — license. Additionally, specialized add-on endorsements are sometimes required to teach certain grade levels and subject matter.
Requirements for Obtaining Licensure
In order to pursue a professional, renewable teaching license, individuals must meet the appropriate education and number of experience hours required by their state. In Virginia, these requirements include 300-500 hours of experience working inside the classroom and a degree in education or related field, among other requirements. Teaching licenses may also require certain subject-specific Praxis examinations.
State Requirements and Reciprocity To Consider
Many states grant teaching licensure on a reciprocal basis if the educating institution is approved by its own state department of education or when graduates of an institution are eligible for teaching licensure in the state in which they were educated. Shenandoah University is a member of NC-SARA, the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements.
Graduates of Shenandoah’s teaching licensure programs are qualified to seek licensure in Virginia and may be eligible to seek licensure in other states. See the Office of Educator Licensure for more details.
